Welcome!

Scientific research is expanding faster than ever. At the same time, new forms of media provide more choices to connect. There is a need for skilled writers who understand both science and cutting-edge communication tools.

With a Master's degree in biomedical sciences, I went to work in the pharmaceutical industry, where I started in sales and marketing and then moved into medical writing. I then broadened my work by becoming a science writer for an international astronomical observatory. Now as a freelance writer, I am both a journalist and an educational writer.

      Science Journalism
As a freelance (contract) science writer my interests are broad, ranging from astronomy to zoology—from the macroanatomy of the universe to the microanatomy of cells.

Recent publications include science feature stories in Nature on rankings of graduate programs in the scients and in Nature Medicine on the role of gut hormones in diabetes. Recent projects include a white paper on sustainable agriculture and web content for FIRE, a new infrared spectrograph in development at MIT for the Magellan Telescope.

      Medical Communications
As a freelance (contract) medical writer, I am a generalist and enjoy writing about all fields of medicine.

Recent and ongoing projects include an e-learning module on oral health, CME programs on cervical disease and diabetes, and editorial management for a women's health newsletter and website.

Content development and e-learning are my writing specialties. These include, but are not limited to:
  • Continuing medical education (CME)
  • Interactive e-learning and multimedia modules
  • Manuscripts
  • Narrator's and tutorial scripts
  • Teaching and training materials (K-adult)
  • Website content
  • Exhibit content
  • Books

      Travel Writing
With almost as many stamps in my passport as writing credits, travel writing is a natural extension of my work.

I am a regular contributor to Hana Hou!, the in-flight magazine of Hawaiian Airlines that uniquely appeals to locals and visitors alike.

      Speaking & Presentations
Sometimes the spoken word is more powerful than the written word. There is both art and science to public speaking. I use the latest research on adult learning to make my presentations memorable.

People often ask me how I got started, where I find story ideas and clients, and how I pull it all together. I enjoy sharing my experience through engaging and fun seminars on various aspects of freelance writing. Previous audiences include students, scientistis-in-training, and medical and research professionals.
